WMLF 2013 Winter Update

Greetings everyone and welcome to 2013 — it’s going to be a good one! It’s hard to believe we are beginning our fourth full year. WMLF has now grown to around 120 members strong and we anticipate a banner year of growth ahead.

WMLF Memberships
WMLF has gone to a yearly membership format which means all Memberships will run from Jan 1 to Dec 31. This also means all 2013 Memberships are now due, and we would like everyone to renew in the first four months of the year. Better yet become a Lifetime Member and you won’t have to fool with it anymore. Current members will be getting an e-mail reminder regarding dues shortly from our new Membership Chairman.

New WMLF Board Members
WMLF has added four new members to our Board. Charlie Rosser, longtime DFC member, was elected to be our new Treasurer. Joe Staller, another DFC member, has agreed to become our Membership Chair (new position). Chuck Green, head guide at Hidden Meadows Ranch, and Jacqueline Hartwig, Fly Fishing Lead at Bass Pro Shops, have also joined the Board. We welcome and look forward to working with them all.

Becker Lake Update
It took WMLF awhile to get our feet on the ground, but once we did, we made a real difference with our efforts. Becker has proven to be a very successful project and we are looking forward to catching some BIG fish in the 5-6 lb range this year. Time will certainly tell soon enough. WMLF has agreed to make Becker an ongoing project and plan to continue improvements as needed. Look for an electric gate to be installed and some other amenities in the near future to make fishing more convenient and enjoyable.

Crescent Lake Update
WMLF’s current major project is Crescent Lake. We have met with the National Forest Service and Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZG&FD) as well as Navopache (power company) working in tandem to get power to the lake for future aerators and other infrastructure. This is still a work in progress and seems to be changing all the time. On a positive note, it seems to be changing for the better as far as costs and time involved are concerned. We will keep you updated when plans are made final. The bottom line is we want to keep the trout in Crescent Lake alive to grow throughout the winter months and Dog Days of summer. As many of you know, this lake has the potential to grow some really BIG fish.

International Sportsman’s Expo (ISE)
WMLF will have a booth at the ISE show this February. Our goal is to get the word out on who we are and what we are doing for Arizona’s anglers. Please stop by and say, “Hello.” We would love to meet our members and answer any questions you have about our organization. This would also be a great opportunity to renew your membership. We will also be raffling off a brand new 590-4 Sage One, 4-piece, 5wt fly rod. The raffle ticket costs have not been determined yet, but a new membership or renewal at the show will get you one ticket, as a bonus.

Becker Best Day
WMLF is planning a Becker Best Day on Saturday, May 4. There will be a raffle for some great fishing items, instructions on how to fish the lake and lunch will be provided. This should be a great time for everyone to meet some fellow members and enjoy the fruits of your contributions. We hope to see you there!

Arizona Trout Challenge
WMLF is working with AZG&FD, and other angling groups, on developing a certificate for catching the six members of the Salmonidae Family that inhabit Arizona. The certificate will be open to everyone, therefore, a WMLF membership will not be a prerequisite.

Here’s to a great 2013 – let’s make it the best one yet,
John Rohmer
WMLF President
